frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between a Traditional Hatha Yoga class and modern yoga class (e.g. vinyasa or flow?)
The main differences you’ll notice during the practice itself are that Traditional classes are based on the experience of energy and the quality of the mind, rather than flexibility or creative sequences. Because of this priority for an internalised experience, there is a deliberate limitation on external distractions like music or complicated postures or sequencing which pull the mind outward. The aim of the game is to deepen your journey inward. Traditional classes often incorporate traditional techniques like bandha and mudra, and every class is structured around the specific pranayama (breath) and meditation (kriya or mantra japa) - we will never ‘skip over’ these crucial elements.
You’ll also notice specific ratios for working with the breath during asana (postures) to affect the nervous system and mind in certain ways that complement the intention of the class, along with longer holds in the postures themselves to cultivate a strong and steady mind. With consistent practice you’ll notice a shift off the mat, in your life: a natural biproduct of Traditional practice is a deeper connection to Truth, Self, and Purpose (dharma).
Do I need yoga or meditation experience to take a class?
No. All of our classes are available to all levels. Our Traditional Hatha classes are the most physically challenging, but they will offer progressive options throughout the practice to ensure students can remain stable and steady: that is the goal of all practice. However, if you are new to yoga, or returning to yoga, we suggest you begin with our Gentle Hatha or Restorative classes.
Which class should I take?
This is an important question that only you can (and must learn to!) answer - because the approach to how and what we practice should always work in favour of meeting the student where they are, and direct them to where they want to be.
Our Moon and Sun classes cater exactly to that:
MOON - Calming, grounding, stabilising. Recommended for those with busy or demanding lifestyles, experiencing stress, anxiety, or big life changes. Moon is the soothing balm to restoring balance, grounding and calming the mind. Suitable at any time of day, especially evening.
SUN - Uplifting, revitalising, inspiring, expressive. Recommended for those who are already calm, grounded, steady and whose life is reflecting back to them stability on all levels (mental health, health, relationships, finances etc.) and they are ready to work with building energy. SUN practices helping to motivate and inspire us - so a stable foundation is essential or else you will only build more of the energy you already have (for example, expansive practices will only amplify an unsteady mind). In those cases, one of our wonderful MOON classes is recommended to help you restore balance.
If you’d like to know more about the science behind this Traditional approach to practice, speak with one of our teachers or keep your eyes peeled for our Dharma Talk educational lectures.
What should I bring to class?
We invite students to bring their own yoga mat, drink bottle, and any other items they use during practice, however we do have public mats and filtered water available.
Where is your studio?
We are situated in the stunning hinterland community of Mudgeeraba Village at 11/58 Railway Street, Mudgeeraba. You’ll find us upstairs above Lenny Pizzeria. Please note that stairs are required to reach the first floor where we are located, there is no wheelchair access.
Where should I park?
There are many areas to park in this area, including street parking on Swan Lane and Railway Street, and surrounding streets. There is more parking nearby Coles and Woolworths (a 2 min walk away).
When should I arrive?
We recommend arriving approximately 10 minutes before class to set yourself, please allow for slightly longer if it is your first time or you plan to set up a membership as this can take time.
Do you have EFTPOS?
We have a ‘Square’ tap option, but it’s always easier if you book online via MindBody first.
Can I film the class on my phone?
You’re welcome to take photos of the space (or selfies with your fellow yogis and teachers!) after class. However to respect your fellow students, please don’t take photos or video during class.
Do I need to book prior?
We do ask that you please book before class to ensure your spot. Our studio is intimately sized (we can fit a maximum of 20 mats, but more comfortably around 12-15) so our class capacity will be slightly lower than some other studios. Booking beforehand secures your spot, and lets us know you’re coming.
